Sophia Giardina

Bio: Sophia is an artist who experiments with mixed medium paintings, mainly using dry wall plaster and acrylic paint to create colorful, textured paintings. She is a self-taught artist who grew up drawing and painting whenever she could. Originally from New York but now residing in Quincy, Sophia has always had a passion for art, despite going to Providence College for Marketing. She experimented with graphite pencil drawings, watercolor portraits of dogs, and acrylic still-life paintings, but eventually wanted to challenge herself with abstract art. From there she realized it was the best way to allow her creativity to really shine. Despite her tiny apartment, she loves painting on large canvases, and is slowly running out of wall space.

Materials and Techniques: apply dry wall plaster (aka spackle) on canvas and then create texture using different types of tools – forks, scrapers, hair clips, spoons. Once dried, I use acrylic paint to bring the work to life - I particularly love using bright and vibrant colors. I finalize every painting with a gloss or matte varnish depending on the look I want.
