Dewa Raka-Goncalves

Bio: Self-taught Balinese artist. Balinese inspired art. Creator/owner of Dewa Arts Paint mostly oil on canvas with brushes and knife, wood carving, batik. * While I was in Elementary School I started painting, black and white sketches on paper * While I was in Middle School, I started Wood Carving * While I was in High School, I started painting on wood and making painting on jewelry *Then I stopped because my parents did not allow me to be an artist, I went to university *After I left university, I went to work for government in the Censorship Department for 4 years 1991-1994 *I could not sensor other artists, it was against my person, so I quit. I started painting oil on canvas for 1 year 1995 *I started a clothing designing business which included batik designs sold in Indonesia and Canada for 2 years 1994-1997 * I stopped doing art completely 1997-2013 *I met my wife in Bali, she learned at a hotel where we stayed, they had one of my paintings, she discovered I use to paint, I never told her I was an artist. *I moved to America for the first time and my wife and daughters gave me a painting set and told me to start painting again 2013 *I painted oil on canvas, water color on paper and canvas, charcoal and chalk on paper and did some art shows in the Boston area 2013-2015 * I started doing Dewa Art Calendars providing art to people who could noy afford original art or don’t have wall space 2014 *I move back to Bali and I stopped painting again 2016 * My father-in-law encouraged me to start painting again, to follow my heart and I started painting again 2017 *2021 We move back to America; we chose specifically to move to Salem to be in a community of art and near other art communities. I will not stop painting or making art again and really begin to push Dewa Arts and putting myself in the art community, doing shows, exhibiting my art (even when I am so shy) taking risks, doing commission work and trying to be a member of art communities. I am now also working on using mixed media, custom kites and carving my own custom craves from wood. 2021---- Present
